Course Description

In this 6-hour course, learners will be introduced to the world of film and television production, including the customs and expected protocols of working on and around a film set. The content of this module will help set the tone of professionalism for new members of the industry by exposing learners to the values and practices of the film and television industry.

Topics covered include:
  • Phases of production
  • Overview of departments and crew positions
  • Production related paperwork
  • How to use a walkie talkie
  • Common dos and don’ts
  • Safety and potential hazards
  • Industry organizations, unions and guilds
  • Employment pathways 

Course Background

This course was originally developed by I.A.T.S.E. Local 849 in the early 2000s as the Set Etiquette Course. Though some materials are still used from the original development, the course content has been refined over the years by many experienced technicians.  This course continues to be the go-to introductory-level course for the Film and Television Industry in the Maritime Provinces.

Is this the same as the Set Etiquette Course? 

Essentially, yes. While this course has a different name and some of the content has been changed, the majority of the material covered in the "Set Etiquette Course" run by I.A.T.S.E. Local 849 is covered in this course as well.  

Do I have to take the Film Industry Orientation course if I've already completed a Set Etiquette Course? 

No. If you have completed a Set Etiquette Course through I.A.T.S.E. Local 849, you do not have to take this course. Additional information on other courses accepted by I.A.T.S.E. Local 849 for the purposes of an application can be found on the website here.
